The future of Wiki-Solar

Wiki-Solar is the world leader in information about the deployment of solar photovoltaic power stations of 4MWAC and above. Over the 13 years since its creation it has built an unrivalled Database of over 1,000-GW of utility-scale solar plants and projects. Now it is time for the next step ...

From April 2026 Wiki-Solar has become RenewAtlas

A greatly enhanced online platform has been developed by a new team with young innovative management. It covers utility-scale solar, as Wiki-Solar always used to, but is adding hybrid projects, such as solar+storage and solar+wind. Check out this new enhanced resource at www.RenewAtlas.com.

From Philip Wolfe, founder of Wiki-Solar:

I created the Database back in 2012, while writing a book on utility-scale photovoltaics and have kept it going since - mainly out of interest. Recently I have been looking for a new home for Wiki-Solar so I can wind down.

My frank assessment of the status of Wiki-Solar, as I offered it to the new team was:

  • The Database currently holds details on over 24,000 solar projects. This has doubled in the last 5 years.
  • About ¾ of the projects are active, the rest are in construction or development.
  • We collect data from a wide variety of sources, including leading developers and contractors, making Wiki-Solar the most comprehensive and reliable dataset for the sector.
  • We have developed sophisticated software to upload and refresh the data. This allows us to maintain the MS Access Database at a commitment around 3-4 person days per week.
  • This software has been designed to be suitable also for wind and other energy types, especially where official data sources cover all renewables or energy generally.
  • We have several blue chip customers, but have not maximised the commercial potential.
  • The website is, frankly, in need of modernisation!

I am delighted that RenewAtlas has been developed to take forward this great resource and am pleased to say that I will still remain involved during the transfer.
